The Forest of Endings Release/Development

The Game

The Forest of Endings is a short puzzle game for windows. My main objective while making it was to make a game that was funny and cute, but also challenging. My main inspiration was Ending Simulator by Funnysounds. I wanted to make a similar game in a more pixel art style. I tried to also add some jokes, but I won’t spoil any (play the game). Overall, I am proud of the result. I had been sitting on it for a while before finally deciding to polish and publish it. It is my first full game on itch.io. My other games are a lot more simple, (but still fun). You can play them using the below links:

Development

This game was developed for a Computer Science class. It was done as my final project, for which we could do whatever we wanted. I decided to develop a game. I chose to use python, because I already wrote a top-down prototype I could re-use. So I began. We had six weeks to complete it, and that was hard. In the end, I had a roughed out version of a game. I got an A, and that was that. This taught me a lot about programming and the design process. But that was it. I ceased development.

Later, I came out with my Retro Games trilogy. I made it under a limited amount of time on an old computer, so it wasn’t that great. Later, I got access to a monitor. Now familiar with itch.io, I finished making the game.

Technique

Here is my design process for the game, step-by-step. First, I had to think of the components I would need:

  • Animated Character
  • Scrolling Background
  • NPCs
  • Speech Boxes
  • Response Boxes
  • Endings
  • A Menu
  • Saving
  • Music

Now, I separated those things into smaller tasks. Here is an example for the player:

  • Player class
  • Rendering Texture
  • Movement
  • Changing Textures
  • Adding a timer

That is all! Thanks for reading!
