CLIPS Devlog #1: What makes horror scary?

CLIPS: A new game

Hello all! I have just started on this service, and created a few small games. But now I want something bigger. And this thing is a horror game known as CLIPS. It will be an escape room type horror for Windows, Mac, and Linux, made in C++(moved to Godot). The Demo will be free, but the full version may cost money.

But now, I am faced with the problem: how do I make the game scary? If you have any other suggestions that what  could help other than what I talk about here, please let me know in the comments!

Research

According to Stephen King, there are three types of horror.

1) Gross-out: This type of horror is revulsion. It includes graphic violence, blood, gore, or something diseased and rotting. It makes the audience scared because their minds match it with disgusting, something that we tend to flinch at. This is the supposed lowest level.

2) Horror: This is when a person sees something that is terrifying. Not necessarily disgusting, but something that can make them scream and run. This is the second type of horror, and the second level.

3) Terror: Terror is the imagination of something that is not necessarily there, but makes the audience scared. It is the anticipation. The dread as you feel something touch you, but that something isn't really there. This is the highest level of horror.

I want to possibly utilize all three. The Gross-out comes with the surroundings. There will be unsettling things in the bunker the game is played in. The horror will come with the jump scare at the end. But leading up to that, I want to strike the audience with absolute terror. But how exactly do I do that?

Planning

"The monster" of this game, is just a masked, shapeless figure. But, with that, there is no possible Gross-out. So, I will add things like failed and ugly experiments. For the horror, I will make the jump scare glitch and shake the screen. You also stare into the soulless and dark eyes of the monster.

Now finally, the terror. This will come with the lead-up. If the monster is near, strange things will begin to happen. Objects will move, there will be flashes at the end of the player's screen and strange sounds. I don't really know what else to do than that. Other than creating a creepy atmosphere, I don't know what else to do?

Please let me know what else I can do!
